Why do you feel the need to be perfect?

We may struggle with the idea that we need to be perfect in everything we do in order to be the best version of ourselves. It’s easy to just say “you need to break out of the habit”. I’ve heard it before as well. Those who struggle with perfectionism know all too well how much it can cripple us on a day to day basis.

Constantly starting something yet hardly committing to it. How many times have you tossed a new journal aside because of a spelling mistake or that yearly planner because your handwriting wasn’t neat enough? Do you still have that sketch book tucked away, too anxious to put a pencil to a page because you might mess it up?

Just who are you trying to impress? Whose approval are you chasing? When the only approval you need is your own. Keep dreaming and visualizing who you know you could be. Believe everything you want to accomplish can be done. As you know, you just need to start somewhere, anywhere. You won’t be able to create what you envision “perfectly”, especially when you first get started. So why not just do things in a messy way. Tell yourself, “no one is going to see this anyway”. Write that cringy story, draw those ugly doodles. Use crayons to write about your day. Make what you are doing more enjoyable, include your inner child in this form of play.

There’s no need to force yourself to do something if you aren’t having fun, it will only make the process more difficult than it needs to be. If it’s something new that you are starting to work on know that it is going to “suck” in your eyes the first time you try. And the voices you internalized will tell you anything to convince you to stop to keep your ego feeling safe. Whatever it is you are striving for will come with many “failures” but you will learn from them. New ideas will follow to improve the “picture” you are creating.

Remember every great work of art starts with a rough draft.
